NGA TAPUWAE O - TANEATUA TRAMPING CLUB

Box 360  Whakatane

The club came into being beside the stream at Tawhana in Te Urewera National Park.  It was the inspiration of the late Peter Fairbrother, who as a teacher at Edgecumbe College had fostered an interest in tramping by forming a school tramping club.  Upon leaving teaching in 1966, he became the Ranger for the northern end of the Urewera National Park.  He became aware of local interest in tramping and in 1968 made moves to form the club.  Members came from all parts of the Eastern Bay of Plenty.  The club's name means "the sacred footsteps of Taneatua."  Taneatua was a great explorer of Te Urewera.

The club has a variety of tramps available.  Two are held on a Thursday and one on Sunday.  There are also weekend and longer trips on occasions.  Contact our secretary for a copy of the trip schedule.

Whilst a moderate level of fitness is essential, the emphasis for all tramps is enjoyment.
